Many individuals also use music functionally, for mood regulation and enhancement ( North & Hargreaves, 1996b Rentfrow & Gosling, 2003 Roe, 1985). One common use of music in contemporary society is pure enjoyment and aesthetic appreciation ( Kohut & Levarie, 1950), another common use relates to music’s ability to inspire dance and physical movement ( Dwyer, 1995 Large, 2000 Ronström, 1999). A challenge to such an investigation is that music is used for many different purposes. Remarkably, however, little is known about the underlying principles on which such individual musical preferences are based. When it comes to self-selected music, individuals demonstrate manifestly different tastes. Taken together, background and intentional music listening add up to more than 5 hours a day of exposure to music for the average American ( Levitin, 2006 McCormick, 2009). In addition to all of these uses of music as a background, a form of sonic wallpaper imposed on us by others, many of us seek out music for our own listening – indeed, Americans spend more on music than they do on prescription drugs ( Huron, 2001). Manufacturers use it to sell their products, while yoga, massage, and exercise studios use it to relax or invigorate their clients. It accompanies movies, television programs, and ball games. It is piped into retail shops, airports, and train stations. The findings from a fourth study suggest that preferences for the MUSIC factors are affected by both the social and auditory characteristics of the music. We have interpreted and labeled these factors as: 1) a Mellow factor comprising smooth and relaxing styles 2) an Urban factor defined largely by rhythmic and percussive music, such as is found in rap, funk, and acid jazz 3) a Sophisticated factor that includes classical, operatic, world, and jazz 4) an Intense factor defined by loud, forceful, and energetic music and 5) a Campestral factor comprising a variety of different styles of direct, and rootsy music such as is often found in country and singer-songwriter genres. The findings from three independent studies converged to suggest that there exists a latent five-factor structure underlying music preferences that is genre-free, and reflects primarily emotional/affective responses to music. Here, we introduce a model of musical preferences based on listeners’ affective reactions to excerpts of music from a wide variety of musical genres. Individuals demonstrate manifestly different preferences in music, and yet relatively little is known about the underlying structure of those preferences. Music is a cross-cultural universal, a ubiquitous activity found in every known human culture.

Among them I like in particular the strategy to use “Card Advance” to look and re-order the first 5 cards of your deck followed by “The true name” that allows you to special summon Slifer from your deck as far as you guess the card on top of your deck. To help with this, the deck also contains a couple of good tricks. Having all these tokens available as tributes should get Slifer into the battlefield quite fast as far as you find a way to get the Divine-Beast in your hand. When using Slifer structure deck, your strategy should exploit the 8 cards with the ability to generate monster tokens. “Slifer The Sky Dragon, Reveal Yourself, My All-Powerful Beast!” Considering these two aspects, both structure decks are designed to provide ingenious ways to summon your divine-beast to the field as quickly as possible and then to maximize their power. In terms of strategy, the two main aspects that strike out immediately are: 1) there is only one copy of each God card in the deck and 2) you will need 3 tributes in order to summon it. At the same time, I feel KONAMI could have made a more detailed strategic guide for each deck instead of having both summarized on the same mat. When both mats are combined, the overall battlefield looks quite good from an aesthetic point of view. The mat is the same for both decks, showing Obelisk and Slifer on the front and a summarized guide on the back. 5 among the eight Rare cards are new while all the others cards of the deck are reprints from previous sets.Įach box contains also the usual double-sided game mat that doubles as a duelling Guide. Structure Decks: General OverviewĮach Egyptian God Deck contains 40 cards: 4 Ultra Rare Cards, 4 Super Rare Cards, 32 Common Cards. Best of all, they also come as a twin starting set to maximize the value and the fun. The new structure decks for Slifer the Sky Dragon and for Obelisk the Tormentor are specifically designed around the characteristics of the two Gods and they could be a great way for new players to get into the game. Long time players have probably bumped into those cards in the past but now KONAMI has decided to make a brand new structure deck for both Obelisk and Slifer. Considering the role they play in the story and how awesome they are, I always wanted to have these cards in my deck. As such, the three Gods, “Slifer the Sky Dragon", "Obelisk the Tormentor" and "The Winged Dragon of Ra", serve as a focal point in the series' manga, the second series anime, and numerous video games. For those who remember the story, the "Egyptian Gods" are one-of-a-kind all-powerful cards created by Maximillion Pegasus, who modelled them after three Ancient Egypt divine beasts represented around the Millennium Puzzle on the stone tablet which is said to hold the memories of the nameless Pharaoh. DockView Adds Windows 7 Like Customizable Live Preview To Mac Dock The box design also allows for some interesting options in terms of reach, pin placement, cushions, tilt plates, shock absorbers and air bags. The term “pin box” is the industry standard and describes the most common design, which is a box frame because it is a good way to make flat steel strong enough to handle the loads much like the truck manufacturers are now building frame rails. Its most important characteristic is structural integrity, creating a strong connection from the trailer frame to the kingpin. The primary function on the pin box is to fix the kingpin at a certain location and angle in relationship to the front of the fifth-wheel trailer. Now it’s time to explore the trailer half of the fifth-wheel connection equation, the pin box. In a recent article (“5th And Go Forth,” September 2012 Trailer Life) we explored the available options for fifth-wheel hitches, which can accommodate short-bed pickups or can improve ride quality and ease of use for your trailer and tow vehicle combination. There are two sides in the truck-to-trailer connection that are critical to the fifth-wheel towing setup. The hardware that connects your truck and trailer can make a big difference in how they behave on the road. If your idea of a good time is climbing onto the back of rodeo stock bred and raised to throw a rider, you can expect a good deal of bucking, but when it comes to towing a fifth-wheel trailer, it’s the last thing you expect or want in your ride. At most two edges can meet at any one point. A hyperbolic polygon is a region of the hyperbolic plane whose boundary is decomposed into finitely many generalized line segments (recall that this includes circle segments), called edges, meeting only at their endpoints, called vertices. Since lines in hyperbolic space differ from our intuition about lines in Euclidean space, we must adjust our understanding of polygons as well. A geodesic between points A and B (created with GeoGebra). This disc model is precisely what Escher saw in Coxeter’s book, and is what he used to create his art.įigure 6. Thus, the idea of “lines” in Euclidean space is generalized when in hyperbolic space to include circles. In Figure 6, the shortest distance, called a geodesic, between A and B is the arc length of the given circle. It turns out that the shortest distance between two points lies along the arc of a circle that is perpendicular to the boundary. Thus, the shortest path between two points may be curved to take advantage of the “less dense” area towards the center of the disc. We think of the space in the disk getting infinitely more “dense” as we approach the boundary of the disc, so the distance of a straight line between two points get longer as we approach the boundary. We can imagine hyperbolic space as an open disk in the complex plane $\C$. To understand them, we will explore an important model of hyperbolic space: the Poincaré disc model. Hyperbolic geometry has many interesting properties that counter our ingrained Euclidean intuition. This is because, while a Euclidean surface has curvature equal to zero everywhere, a hyperbolic surface has constant negative curvature (for comparison, a sphere has constant positive curvature).įigure 4. The wavy structure is the tip-off that their surfaces exhibit hyperbolic geometry. Two common examples are sea slugs (Figure 4) and lettuce (Figure 5). Although it at first seems unnatural to think about parallel lines performing in “new” ways, hyperbolic surfaces can be found in nature. Proving that the postulate need not hold led to the discovery of an important “non-Euclidean” geometry called hyperbolic geometry. However, the Parallel Postulate need not hold true in all cases, such as on the surface of a sphere. Proving that triangles have 180˚ angle sums is an application of this postulate. The “Parallel Postulate,” which states that if one straight line crosses two other straight lines to make both angles on one side less than 90˚, then the two lines meet. However, one of them was a great source of debate between mathematicians. This assumes Euclid’s axioms, which he intended to be the basis of all geometry. So what is hyperbolic space? Grade school mathematics is taught using Euclidean geometry. To fully understand the beauty of his works, it is helpful to have a basic understanding of hyperbolic geometry. This image sparked a new area of Escher’s exploration of infinity. Coxeter sent Escher a copy of the talk, which included an illustration depicting a tessellation of the hyperbolic plane (Figure 3). Coxeter and Escher struck up a correspondence when Coxeter hoped to use Escher’s unique depictions of symmetry in a presentation for the Royal Society of Canada. Escher’s ideas about structure, pattern, and infinity were suddenly enhanced when he came across the work of geometer H. Click HERE to access your employee profile. I'm not doing it because you'll get no credit for this great script you wrote. I said to Anne, 'Here's why I'm not doing it. (Producer) Jim Brooks and I had many meetings about this and he was very persuasive about my doing it. "I was offered 'Big' and I turned it down because my sister Anne had written it. At the time of the film's release in 1988, Spielberg's Amblin co-founder, producer Frank Marshall, said the legendary director had dropped out of "Big" due to a scheduling conflict with his WWII drama "Empire of the Sun." However, Spielberg told Flavourmag the truth is he passed for much more personal reasons: Spielberg was actually in the running to direct "Big" at one point, with Harrison Ford set to star instead of Hanks. I remember having, for me, a very stilted dinner because I was meeting - ya know - Steven Spielberg." Hanks recalled how they met to Flavourmag in March 2016, stating, "I was petrified. In fact, it was because of his sister's involvement that Steven Spielberg decided to pass on directing "Big." Spielberg Didn't Want To Take All The CreditĪlthough they didn't work together for the first time until "Saving Private Ryan" in 1998, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks were real-life friends well before that. It's almost like a Steven Spielberg film in the way it blends light-hearted comedy with earnest drama - perhaps because it was co-written by Spielberg's sister, Anne Spielberg. "Big" is equally thoughtful in the way it shows Josh struggling to adjust to the harsh realities of adult life and coming to see the value in experiencing all the ups and downs that come with adolescence. Yes, Josh and Susan's relationship is kind of weird and creepy when you ignore the magical realist conceit, but Marshall was well-aware of that and took care to handle their love story as sensitively as possible. He even begins a romance with his co-worker Susan (Elizabeth Perkins), who finds his sincerity and innocence a welcome balm after years of dating self-absorbed, insecure men. Thanks to his child-like outlook, Josh is quickly able to snag a high-profile job at a lucrative toy company. Released in 1988, Marshall's hit comedy centers on Josh (David Moscow), a 12-year old boy whose wish to be "big" results in him falling asleep one night only to wake up a 30-something adult (Hanks). Director Penny Marshall's " Big" was, in many ways, the film that made Tom Hanks. The solution for this is just to manually dismount your encrypted drives before shutting down, but it is something to be aware of. Users of encryption programs like TrueCrypt have reported that encrypted drives they had mounted before shutting down their system were automatically remounted when starting back up. Fast Startup can interfere slightly with encrypted disk images. If a shutdown doesn’t apply your updates, a restart still will. Restart is unaffected, though, so it still performs a full cold shutdown and restart of your system. Since applying new system updates often requires a shutdown, you may not be able to apply updates and turn your computer off. When Fast Startup is enabled, your computer doesn’t perform a regular shut down. But Fast Startup also has its problems, so you should take the following caveats into consideration before enabling it: Why You Might Want to Disable Fast Startup And don’t forget, Windows offers various shutdown options too. Fast Startup offers a freshly-started Windows, just more quickly. Hibernation is great if you want to return your computer to the exact state it was in when you turned it off. When you put your computer into hibernation mode, it also saves open folders and applications, as well as currently logged in users. This is different from the regular hibernate feature. RELATED: What's the Difference Between Sleep and Hibernate in Windows? This technique can shave considerable time off your start up. Instead, it just refreshes your RAM with the loaded image from the hibernation file and delivers you to the login screen. When you start the computer again, Windows does not have to reload the kernel, drivers, and system state individually. Windows then alerts device drivers that support it to prepare for hibernation, saves the current system state to the hibernation file, and turns off the computer. At this point, Windows is in a state very similar to when it’s freshly booted up: No users have logged in and started programs, but the Windows kernel is loaded and the system session is running. When you shut down your computer with Fast Startup enabled, Windows closes all applications and logs off all users, just as in a normal cold shutdown. Fast Startup combines elements of a cold shutdown and the hibernate feature. |
